The City of Nelson has partnered with the WildSight Youth Climate Corp to raise awareness around climate solutions already available today. Throughout the summer, the Youth Climate Corp has been acting as Nelson Next Ambassadors at the Nelson Farmer’s Markets aiming to inspire local action on climate change.

The Youth Climate Corp exists to connect and empower young people who are looking to make a difference and are passionate about climate action. Crew members received training on how to have meaningful face-to-face conversations with residents about the City’s Climate Plan with the goal of increasing awareness and encouraging participation. They also had the opportunity to visit City Hall and get to know how the City is working to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for extreme weather events in the community.

“It is essential that youth are brought into the conversation around climate solutions and given opportunities to grow as leaders,” says Cecilia Jaques, Climate & Energy Advisor with the City of Nelson. “This partnership is just one of the ways we are engaging with the community, and we look forward to working more closely with youth as we implement the City’s Climate Plan.”

The Youth Climate Corp will be wrapping up their work season at the end of the month but the impact on the community will last much longer.
